The Art Portal issue on Newgrounds

2011-10-19 12:03:20 by JackieBlue

Fuck all if no one reads this, I just need to get it out.
I may have jumped the gun a little when I said "issue". I meant to say "serious fucking problem". Because there really is a problem with the art portal. I'm sure others have noticed, but it's reached a point where I'm beginning to question the authority of some of the Newgrounds staff.

~Insubordination: it's the new black~

Now then. The art portal is a place for Newgrounds users to display their artwork to the community in order to receive either acclaim, feedback or...what have you. There are others, however, who seek to use it as a means of trolling our (the Newgrounds community) asses with intentionally shitty works and feed off the jeers and sarcasm of others. Personally...I find nothing wrong with that.

What I DO have a problem with is when the staff gives the OK to a work that they believe is "funny bad" and displays it for all. What breaks my heart is that the artist has really put there all into it and may not have the technical know-how or a great modicum of talent to pull off the masterpiece they wanted to. And are then ridiculed for it. I'm not trying to sound like a nag or a softy, but as someone who still has quite a bit to learn in the field of fine arts, it's a real blow to your self-confidence when you put your best foot forward only to be violently shoved back into obscurity. We're all here to learn from each other and to help each other out with constructive feedback and helpful tips. This isn't a grade school playground for fuck's sake where the kids are just mean for the sake of mean. The least some of the staff can do is lead by example and not encourage this trend. Amazing, thoroughly-planned and technically precise art? Fantastic! Tongue-in-cheek, shitty troll art? Hilarious. In-progress, still-got-a-long-way-to-go mediocre art? Well, you know how I feel.

And that's my piece.

Yeah I have no idea why any site showcases art at all. It's a serious blow to people's confidence.

Yeah it's a shame, been this way for a while though.

Newgrounds prepares you for the way the world really is.

JackieBlue responds:

Ehh, not the way I see it. Newgrounds gives spineless douche nozzles the luxury of a sense of anonymity and ability to build a reputation for themselves that remains unaffected by the sort of person they truly are. In "the real world", it's either put up or shut up. There isn't a damn person out there who would take shit from a childish, derisive, self-righteous Newgrounder when pulled away from the safety of their computers. It's quite sad.

I dunno. Generally I agree, but you should've heard my first attempt at putting some music out here for the community to listen to. It was horrific. So from the experience of ridicule, I came away with "well, ok, everyone thought it was bad... so they were right about some things but it's probably just execution." So after more practice and work, things get decent.

Granted, I'm not necessarily the sensitive flower that others may be, as I've thickened my skin from years of BBSing, but still. I think it's an imperfect way to avoid the coddling that those close to you might give you.

JackieBlue responds:

I think you're absolutely right. In a perfect world, users would take advantage of their semi-anonymity and post their works, while the rest of us, in turn, would use our semi-anonymity and provide honest, constructive criticism without feeling inhibited by any hurt feelings or what have you. Unfortunately, you know how the saying goes. Give a pair of scissors to a barber with parkinson's and eyes WILL be gouged. Granted, an inappropriate saying, but doesn't that just prove my point? A large portion of users will say anything, and do, simply because they can. No thought. No good intentions. Just verbal diarrhea for the sake of shock value. Now, I don't mean to come off as a pessimist. I do believe that some users do well and truly provide constructive criticism, myself included.

There's just...like...A LOOOOT of bullshit to sift through nowadays.
